ROSENDALE — Just days after a tragic car accident, fate brought together two school communities in mourning. On Jan. Mary's Springs Academy Ledgers faced off in game between conference rivals. But before tip-off in a packed gym, any rivalry was put on hold as the teams and crowd hung their heads together in prayer and a moment of silence to remember the lives of Nevins Zoch and Tommy Koenigs — best friends who went to Laconia and Springs, respectively. While the stands were divided between supporters of the Spartans and Ledgers, the community was united in support of helping everyone grieve after the tragedy. When Eamonn O'Keefe, principal for St.

Mary's Springs High School, got a call from law enforcement officials early the morning of Jan. The single-car crash happened around 3 a. Initial reports described a vehicle that lost control and hit a tree. One boy, later identified as Nevins, was pronounced dead at the scene. Another boy, Tommy, eventually succumbed to life-threatening injuries suffered from the accident. The third passenger, who Fond du Lac County officials identified as year-old Gillian Schwartz of Fond du Lac High School, sustained nonlife-threatening injuries. Almost right away, O'Keefe said he began working with other school leaders to figure out how to communicate with parents and identify ways to "put their arms around" the school community, especially the students.

When students arrived at school the following Monday, St. Mary's Springs had an altered schedule, with students having an option to "check out" if they felt overwhelmed, O'Keefe said. In a message shared with families that Monday, academy president Stacey Akey said, as part of an "all hands" approach to support its students, it brought trained counselors on campus, therapy dogs and additional resources for mental health referrals. O'Keefe said schools from around the area shared mental health resources with each other to help assist the students. Diane Raue, principal for Laconia High School, said her school brought in extra counselors to help students try to work through the loss.

O'Keefe said he felt "humbled" by the way the school staff responded to support students. With the smell of popcorn in the air, the sound of squeaking shoes on a court and young children running around the upper deck of the gym, it was almost like any normal home game for the Laconia Spartans. But at a table past the ticket booth was another table, with two boxes for donations and helpers passing out stickers that honored Nevins and Tommy. Tasch was one of the parents busy at the table. Tasch said there was a steady stream of people coming up to talk to her, pick up a sticker with an illustration honoring the two boys and passing out over bracelets for students to wear in the two school's colors. Tasch said she didn't know what to expect in terms of how many people would come by to give donations to Nevins' and Tommy's families to help them in the time of tragedy, but the boxes were filled with cash and countless students came to pick up stickers.

O'Keefe said the community's desire to show support to the families of the two boys started right away. Just a day after the crash as O'Keefe was planning on how St. Mary's Springs would respond, he said parents were reaching out to him, asking how they could help. The community has wrapped their arms around the families of the boys in the wake of the tragedy. Multiple GoFundMes for Nevins and Tommy raised money for their families to support with funeral expenses. Angie Loomans, mom of a sophomore on the Laconia boy's basketball team, noted students came not just from Laconia and St. Mary's Springs, but also Fond du Lac High School to that night's game in the gym. Many students also had T-shirts or sweatshirts with the same logo honoring the two boys.
