The novel begins—as does each succeeding chapter—with a wide-angle view of the Bowery, New York, a deeply impoverished neighborhood. When Jimmie is outnumbered by his opponents, he is rescued by Pete, a teenager from his neighborhood. Pete is swaggeringly confident and full of scorn for the young hoodlums. Jimmie immediately throws himself straight back into the fight, until his father brusquely and violently hauls him home.


Eventually, she passes out. Time passes. Tommie dies, and so does the father of the family. All Maggie wants is to escape from her family. Wilson and C. Her father was no help to children and did not make the situation any better. Even though Maggie differs from the people around her, their ignorance and lack of education are making it hard for her to change her life.


Readers could portray the circumstance and conditions of Maggie as living among low scale people; it is misery for Maggie. To improve her life Maggie has to escape her own community. However, Maggie cannot escape her slum world and it eventually leads her to a tragic end, where she is abandoned from her family and lover and causes her to become a prostitute.
