Both Bob and Ponyboy have silly vices drinking and smoking, respectively that are shown to be more dangerous than they at first seem. Most surprising, Bob is just as aggrieved toward his parents as the orphan Ponyboy is toward his own mom and dad.

Although Bob can have as much money as he wants, he feels his parents coddle him and wishes they would occasionally show respect for him by turning down one of his childish requests. Despite their surface differences, Bob and Ponyboy have in common feelings of frustration, anxiety, and heartbreaking hope. Like Bob and Ponyboy, several other alleged antagonists prove to be touchingly similar in The Outsiders. Randy is in part responsible for seriously wounding Johnny, but like Johnny, he has a streak of anxiety and naïve idealism, which leads him to plan to bow out from the climactic fight between the Socs and greasers.

Darry has none of the economic or social advantages that distinguish Randy and Bob, but as Ponyboy points out, Darry has a work ethic and an ambition that could easily turn him into a Soc under other circumstances. Natural enemies, the Socs and greasers are both groups of confused, angry children that wish for more guidance and understanding from the adult world. By drawing out the startling similarities between Bob and Ponyboy, Hinton prepares us for the larger theme of a common humanity that runs throughout her novel.

Despite their identification with different groups, Bob and Ponyboy turn out to share weaknesses, uncertainties, and dreams. Like these two antagonists, several minor characters have superficial distinctions that overshadow their shared sense of passion and vulnerability. Hinton, I will do a review of the story, the point of view, theme, symbols and my opinion about this book I really liked to read for the English class. He who faces no calamity will need no courage. Ponyboy, The protagonist in The Outsiders, faces some very tough things, but they end up greatly impacting him later on. Throughout the novel, S. E Hinton suggests that everyone has their own problems, but they are what make you more powerful and smarter. The chapters of the Outsiders by S. Hinton, is about two gangs the greasers and the Socs, who are always causing trouble. In the greaser gang, the protagonist, Ponyboy, is always getting good grades and is the smartest in the gang. Dally is one of the members in the gang, Ponyboy 's brother, has been in jail multiple times.

He works at a gas station. Also some of the members in the gang have been jumped by Socs, who are rich well treated people. In the beginning of the book the author wrote about Johnny getting jumped and beat up almost to death. Johnny and Ponyboy go to the movies with two Socs. Johnny and Ponyboy stay late at night in the empty parking lot. They fell asleep and got home later than. Ponyboy and Johnny meet up with Dally and go to the Nightly Double drive-in theatre. The interesting part, however, is that Cherry Valance, a soc, described the Socs to be emotionless and apathetic, which led them to use violence to express their feelings. On the other side, Cherry characterized the greasers to be too emotional which led them to antagonize the Socs and causing conflicts. Throughout the book, the theme rich vs poor reflected the Socs and greasers. As the conflict continues, it slowly came to an end when the Socs became more humanized by the death of Bob. Many things have been either left out or diminished from the movie, which makes it less interesting as the suspense lessens as you have finished reading the book. After that the girls hang around with them for awhile until their boyfriends show up drunk and angry that two other guys are talking to their girls. The girls go home with them and Ponyboy and Johnny leave. Later that night they run into them again and they remember them starting a fight.
